The Aura of the Book: Larry Towell’s The Mennonites

Larry Towell is one of the most celebrated photographers currently working. Although I am not a photojournalist, I admire his capacity to consistently make work that is both richly faithful to the immediate story, and to a vision coming from the best visual and ethical traditions of modernist humanism.

This essay offers a descriptive appreciation of his book The Mennonites, and briefly considers its place within a contemporary cultural landscape.
