This is a site of documentary photography and writing about photography, showing photographic work made between 1998 and 2008 and writing from 2000-2002.

After several years working as a film-maker in South Africa, where I grew up, I have taught film-making and documentary practice to postgraduates at the University of Bristol for over 25 years, with alumni from over 50 countries. I have particular interests in the legacy of colonialism in Britain and South Africa. My photographic work has been informed by interests in photographic theory, cultural perception and representation, and documentary ethics, and I have been fortunate enough to have had several grants from the Arts and Humanities Research Council of Great Britain.

My current research interests are centred on the narratives that South Africans from settler backgrounds who have emigrated to Britain deploy to underwrite their sense of place and trajectory.
